How many Sainik Schools are in Maharashtra?

PUNE: The 38 Sainiki Schools in Maharashtra have enrolled nearly 11,500 students in secondary sections, but when it came to these students taking admission to defence institutes, the aim in setting up these schools, has not been up to expectations. The Maharashtra State Council of Education Research and Training (MSCERT) has decided to survey all these schools and find out what has been lacking and frame a new policy.

They hope to ensure a maximum number of students to join the defence services. The schools provide military education but a review by the education department revealed that their performance in the last few years after their establishment was unsatisfactory. Compared to the enrolment every year, the number of students who go for military service is not much.

Due to this, the school education department has decided to change the policy of these military schools. “There is a glorious tradition of valour from Maharashtra. In order to maintain it and to improve enrolment in the army, students should be attracted to military service, with the aim of cultivating the qualities of discipline, self-confidence, bravery, leadership and patriotism,” director of secondary education in state, K K Patil, said.

The school education department formed a committee under the chairmanship of the director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training on December 6 to change the policy of military schools with directors of secondary and higher secondary education departments, principal of Satara Sainik School, among others as its representative members on the panel.

An annual fee of Rs 15,000 is charged from the students. This covers the food and lodging expenses. Fee reimbursement for backward class students is done by social welfare department. Also, the expenses of five financially backward and five ex-servicemen’s children are paid by the concerned organization.

Military schools in the state are residential schools and are fully subsidised from the year of approval. Patil said, “The committee will find out if the purpose of Sainiki schools is served. The committee would also deliberate on what measures could be taken to strengthen these schools.” Last year, the Union government decided to set up 100 new Sainiki schools for girls to join the armed forces and contribute to national security.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh had said the government is for increasing the role of women in the armed forces.
