Can Punjab Kings still qualify?

With two games remaining in the tournament against DC and RR, Punjab have a great chance to qualify for the playoffs by winning both of their remaining fixtures. However, one thing that could dent their chances of finishing in the top four is their poor net run rate of -0.268.

Is there any chance for PBKS to qualify 2023?

PBKS need a near-miracle to qualify for IPL 2023 playoffs – After 65 league matches in IPL 2023, Punjab Kings are eighth in the points table, with 12 points from 13 games. They also have a poor net run rate of -0.308. If Punjab beat in their last league match, they will finish on 14 points, but due to their inferior net rate, it will be next to impossible for them to end in the top four after the conclusion of the league stage.

To have even a slim chance of qualifying, PBKS will need to hammer RR by a mammoth margin and then hope that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) lose their last league games by very big margins, by such an extent that their net run rates fall below that of PBKS. That doesn’t sound like a realistic possibility though, at least not in the case of RCB, who have an impressive net run rate of +0.180.

MI, on the other hand, have a net run rate of -0.128. (KKR) will also finish on 14 points if they beat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their last league game on May 20. However, with a net run rate of -0.256, they are unlikely to move into the top four even with a big win.

Who will captain RCB in 2023?

IPL 2023: Virat Kohli has been freed after Faf du Plessis took over RCB captaincy, says Simon Doull : Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull feels that Faf du Plessis taking over as RCB captain has helped free Virat Kohli after the duo put on a magical partnership against SRH on Thursday.

Du Plessis took over as the skipper of RCB ahead of the 2022 IPL after Kohli had decided to step down after the previous campaign. The 2023 season has seen the duo pile on the runs at the top for their team and give Bangalore the ideal start in many matches. | Du Plessis and Kohli put on an opening stand of 172 against SRH and helped RCB win the match by eight wickets.

The Indian star scored his sixth IPL hundred while Du Plessis scored his eighth half-century of the season.

in the IPL with their partnership against SRH. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Doull said that he loved the fact that Kohli was aggressive against spinners and it was the hallmark of their innings.

“What I loved about Virat’s innings was that he was very aggressive against the spinners. That has been his achilles heel this year, but he was really aggressive against the spinners. It was a hallmark of his innings,” said Doull. The renowned commentator went on to say that Kohli took control inside in the powerplay for RCB while Du Plessis was quite slow at the start.

Doull said that the duo compliment each other well and said that Du Plessis’ taking over as captain has helped Kohli immensely and freed him up for the IPL. “Faf was quite slow at the start. He didn’t get a lot of strike. Virat sort of took control inside that powerplay and that was one of the keys for him today.

He really got off to a flyer which is something that Faf has done more often than not in that combination.” “But today it was Virat’s turn and he never looked back. They just compliment each other. You were talking about a bromance. They just know and run between the wickets so well.

Is Punjab King out for IPL?

videoDetails Yashwant Bhaskar | Updated: May 18, 2023, 08:16 PM IST Punjab was defeated in the IPL match played between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings yesterday. After which Punjab Kings are now out of IPL 2023. Captain Shikhar Dhawan has accepted his mistake.

Will Bairstow play IPL 2023?

Jonny Bairstow will not play IPL 2023 as the England wicketkeeper-batter, who plays for Punjab Kings, continues to recover from the freak injury he picked up last September. ESPNcricinfo has learned that uncapped Australian batter Matthew Short will be Bairstow’s replacement for the 2023 season.

  1. Ings, via the BCCI, had been waiting for Bairstow’s exact fitness status from the ECB after he had resumed training in late February as part of his rehab.
  2. It is understood the BCCI informed Kings on Saturday to go ahead with the replacement, and the franchise confirmed the news later that day.
  3. This week, Bairstow started batting in the Yorkshire nets and it is understood that he will aim to play a couple of games in the County Championship in May – potentially while keeping wicket – as he aims to reach full fitness in time for England’s next Test on June 1, against Ireland at Lord’s.

The ECB are happy with Bairstow’s progress and are confident he will return in time to play a full part in the Ashes, which starts on June 16. Bairstow broke his left leg and dislocated his ankle on September 2, days before the third and final Test of England’s home series against South Africa.

  1. He was playing golf with friends when he slipped and suffered multiple fractures in his fibula, which required a plate to be inserted when he underwent surgery a few days later, and also sustained ligament damage.
  2. IMPORTANT UPDATE We regret to inform you that Jonny Bairstow will not be a part of the IPL this season because of his injury.

We wish him the best and look forward to seeing him next season. We are pleased to welcome Matthew Short as his replacement. #PunjabKings pic.twitter.com/NnUMjCe8jV — Punjab Kings (@PunjabKingsIPL) March 25, 2023 He has since missed all the cricket England have played, including the T20 World Cup where he was meant to open with his captain Jos Buttler.

He has also missed tours to Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand and Bangladesh, as well as the ILT20 where he was due to play for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders. Brendon McCullum, England’s Test coach, has previously indicated that Bairstow will come straight back into the side when fit, though finding a role for him will not be straightforward since Harry Brook, his replacement at No.5, has made a stellar start to his international career, with four hundreds in his first six Tests.

Zak Crawley and Ben Foakes appear to be the most vulnerable players in the side, but leaving either out would necessitate a rebalancing of the side and McCullum has also warned against trying to “crowbar people in”. Recognised as one of the world’s leading all-format batters, Bairstow’s absence is bound to have an impact on Kings’ strategy.

  1. Last IPL, Bairstow scored 253 runs in 11 innings, averaging 23.00 with a strike rate of 144.57, with two half-centuries.
  2. Initially, it may mean Bhanuka Rajapaksa is given an opportunity.
  3. For Short, this will be his first IPL experience.
  4. He was the Player of the Tournament at the recent Big Bash League where, opening for Adelaide Strikers, he scored 458 runs – the second-highest in the tournament – at an average of 35.23 and a strike rate of 144.47.

His best performance was an unbeaten 100 in a chase of 230 to beat Hobart Hurricanes. Athletic in the field, Short also is a handy offspinner. He kept his head high while bowling in the powerplay during the BBL and took 11 wickets in all, at an economy of 7.13.

Is RCB out of IPL?

Virat Kohli penned a heartfelt note for his fans after RCB failed to qualify for IPL 2023 playoffs.

Is Punjab Kings eliminated from IPL?

Who needs what to qualify for the IPL play-offs? – Fixtures: Delhi Capitals v Chennai Super Kings (Saturday 20 May, 11:00 BST), Kolkata Knight Riders v Lucknow Super Giants (Saturday 20 May, 15:00 BST), Mumbai Indians v Sunrisers Hyderabad (Sunday 21 May, 11:00 BST), Royal Challengers Bangalore v Gujarat Titans (Sunday 21 May, 15:00 BST).

Defending champions Gujarat Titans are guaranteed to top the table and will have two chances to qualify for the final. Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants know that wins in their final games on Saturday will definitely confirm their place in the play-offs, with net run-rate deciding who takes the important second position.

Even if they lose, they could still qualify depending on other results. Royal Challengers Bangalore are in pole position for the final spot, with a victory likely to confirm their place. If they get it, then Mumbai Indians would have to win by a large margin to overtake them on net run-rate.

Is Punjab Kings out of IPL?

Will Punjab Kings make it to the IPL 2023 playoffs? – Punjab Kings have been knocked out of IPL 2023 playoffs contention. Their season has come to a disappointing end.

Is Punjab Kings out of playoffs?

A third team has now been knocked out of the race for the playoffs this season. Punjab Kings’ 4 wicket loss vs Rajasthan Royals saw them join Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad as the third team to be eliminated. So what does that do to the points table? It leaves 6 teams vying for 3 remaining playoff berths.

  • While CSK and LSG are frontrunners to secure a top 4 berth, anything can happen in the final 4 matches left to play, with NRR likely to play a big role in deciding the fate of a few teams.
  • There still remain 16 possible combinations of results.
  • TOI looks at each of these possibilities to calculate the chances of individual teams making it to the playoffs.

As things stand, one team is guaranteed to finish on top, two others are almost certain to make the play-offs, another two are strong contenders, leaving RR and KKR to hope they can sneak through. The bottom three have already been knocked out. TOI’s Shankar Raghuraman does the number crunching to determine how the teams stand as of Saturday, May 20 morning, in 8 points: 1.

GT are already guaranteed to top the table at the end of the group stage.2. CSK’s chances of making it to the top four on points are also very good at 93.8% with only one combination of results placing them in fifth spot – LSG, MI and RCB winning their last games and CSK losing to DC. They could also miss out via NRR if they lose to DC, RCB beat GT, KKR beat LSG and MI beat SRH,

That would leave CSK and LSG tied on 15 points and NRR, which is currently a little better for CSK, would decide the fourth spot.3. Third placed LSG are in a very similar situation with a 93.8% chance of being among the top four in terms of points. The only way they can finish fifth on points is if they lose their last game and RCB, CSK and MI win theirs.

  • They could be tied for fourth with CSK if both lose their final games and KKR, MI and RCB win theirs, leaving NRR to decide the final play-off spot.4.
  • Fourth-placed RCB’s chances of making the top four on points are now at 75%.
  • They can finish fifth on points if they lose their last game against GT and MI win against SRH.

They could lose out via NRR in multiple scenarios, including two in which they win their last game.5. RR have moved up to fifth spot following Friday’s win, but they can only make the play-offs through the NRR route since the best they can achieve is tied fourth (25% chance).

For that to happen, they have to hope SRH beat MI and GT beat RCB. The good news for them is that currently their NRR is better than two of the three teams they could be tied with – MI and KKR – and while RCB’s NRR is better now, a defeat could change that.6. Sixth placed MI’s situation is a mirror image of RCB’s.

They too have a 75% chance of being among the top four in terms of points but can finish fifth if they lose their last game to SRH and RCB beat GT. They are, however, worse placed in case of ties for fourth place because of a much lower NRR than those they could tie, with barring KKR.7.

Seventh placed KKR have a 12.5% chance of being among the top four on points and even that will involve a three-way or four-way tie. They will need to win their last match by a big margin to make up for their currently poor NRR. But they still need GT to beat RCB and SRH to beat MI.8. Eighth placed PBKS have joined ninth and tenth placed SRH and DC as the teams to be out of the play-offs race.

How we calculate these probabilities: We looked at all 16 possible combinations of results with 4 matches remaining. We assumed that for any given match the chances of either side winning are even. We then looked at how many of the combinations put each team in one of the top four slots by points.
