About UGET – COMEDK is the “Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka” – an autonomous institution consisting of senior academicians and reputed administrative officers who have been associated with the educational eco system.

This autonomous COMEDK was entrusted the responsibility to organize testing procedures to determine the merit of aspiring students in an effective, fair, transparent and non-exploitative procedure by KPCF (Karnataka Professional Colleges Foundation – Medical & Dental) and KUPECA (Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges Association).

By this, COMEDK has been serving 16 Medical, 24 Dental and around 150 Engineering Colleges. COMEDK since its inception in 2004-05 has been conducting the annual entrance exam for Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in the participating institutions and has also been organizing single window centralized counseling process over the last 15 years.

In all these years, the efforts of COMEDK have been appreciated by all the Government appointed Admission Overseeing Committees and also been mentioned by the Hon’ble Supreme Court as the model examination. Subsequent to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) being mandated as the only acceptable entrance exam for admission to Medical and Dental courses in the country, COMEDK continues the evaluation process for the members of KUPECA i.e., around 190 Engineering colleges.

For the current academic year 2023-24, COMEDK would conduct an online examination all over India on Sunday, the 28th May 2023, across 400 centers for Engineering programs which offer around 20000 seats and will be followed by online counseling. Karnataka having been pioneers in establishing premier professional higher educational institutions, still continues to be the most sought after destination for students who seek quality in established colleges.

The said test will be held keeping in view the triple test criteria of being fair, transparent and non-exploitative and to ensure merit based admissions through a single common entrance test followed by centralized Online counseling as envisaged by the Hon’ble Supreme Court in TMA Pai Foundation Vs.

This Brochure provides a fair idea as to how and what the candidates have to follow as procedure for filling the application, eligibility criteria, test procedures, eligibility to participate in seat selection process, mandatory certificates/ documents to be produced, securing the Test Admission Ticket, the malpractices and the measures required to be observed for avoiding the same, consequences of such malpractices, etc.

How many students appeared for COMEDK 2023 in Karnataka?

By Pearl DSouza Bengaluru: Compared to the past year’s six students, this year, four students from Bengaluru were in the top 10 ranks in the Comed-k Examination. The results were announced on Saturday. Rank one was secured by Nandha Gopi Krishna from Sarjapur, a student of DPS Bengaluru East.

Other rank holders from the city are Siddarth Pamidi from Banashankari (rank 3), Arjun B Dikshit from Sanjaynagar (rank 9), and Manish H Parashar from RR Nagar (rank 10). Others from the top 10 ranks included two each from Haryana and Kerala, and one from, Andra Pradesh, and Karnataka (Mysuru) respectively.

ComedK announced that 53 out of the first 100 rank holders are from Karnataka. Percentile score was considered for announcing the ranks. As many as 2,543 candidates were in the 90 to 100 percentile. The test which was held in 264 centers in 179 cities across the country had 77,232 students attempting the examination (25,244 Karnataka and 51,988 Non-Karnataka), as per COMEDK.

• The entrance test conducted by the Consortium of Medical Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) for undergraduate engineering admissions will be merged with the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) conducted by the state government from the next academic year.
• This decision was taken at a meeting between state government and private engineering college managements on Wednesday.
• With this, the KCET will become an all-India exam.

Representatives of the Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges Association (KUPECA) for whom the COMEDK used to conduct the entrance test have agreed to go for a single entrance test. However, the Karnataka Religious and Linguistic Minority Private Colleges Association (KRLMPCA) did not agree.

1. “With the COMEDK test scrapped, we will extend the KCET to the national level and sign an agreement with the KUPECA,” Higher Education Minister C N Ashwath Narayan said.
2. Seat sharing and fees will be as per the consensual agreement signed between the government and the colleges.
3. Every year, around 70,000 students register for the COMEDK test – most of them from Karnataka – for seats in more than 180 private engineering colleges.
4. The KRLMPCA said that they will continue to have their own entrance test to fill the seats at 12 minority institutions in the state.
5. According to sources, the higher education department will soon hold a meeting with private universities, too, on them adopting KCET for admissions.
6. That a single entrance test should be held for engineering courses was proposed in 2021 by the Admission Overseeing Committee (for professional courses).

At present, besides KCET, there are entrance tests of COMEDK, KRLMPCA and the Association of Minority Professional Colleges in Karnataka (AMPCK). Also, each private university has its own entrance test. : No COMEDK entrance test for undergraduate engineering courses from next year

For those students who have not studied Kannada in their PUC or class 12, syllabus is being readied to introduce them to the basics of the language. Such students will have a separate text. Currently, learning Kannada is mandatory for students pursuing their engineering and medical courses from colleges in Karnataka.

For students who have not learnt the language previously, a ‘Basic Kannada’ text is prescribed. The directive by the department of higher education states that students pursuing BA or BSc degrees from this academic year onwards will opt for two core discipline subjects. In their third year, students will be given an option to select either or both these core subjects as their major subjects for study.

Higher Education minister had convened a day-long meeting with vice chancellors of various universities to discuss the implementation of NEP 2020 from the current academic year (2021-22). The admission module, which will act as a framework to be followed by universities will be launched through the Unified University and College Management System (UUCMS) on August 23 where information regarding major subjects, minor subjects, core electives, open electives, vocational training, etc.

A total of 2,03,381 students passed Karnataka Common Entrance Test-2023, and secured eligibility for engineering courses in 2023-24 as against 1,71,656 last year.

• This essentially means the number of students eligible for admission to engineering courses is almost four times the number of seats available in the state.
• There are just over 53,000 engineering seats available in the state.
• Opportunity for students whose results have been withheld If the result is withheld/not announced for want of 2nd PUC/ Class 12 th marks card/proof of date of birth of any candidate, such candidates have to submit the photocopy of the said document to KEA through email (keauthority-ka@nic) or fax or in person.

Thereafter KEA will publish the result of such candidates, senior officials said. In the case of CBSE candidates, they may forward their mark sheet to KEA through email following which spot rank will be announced, KEA said in a statement. 3. Interestingly, the KCET result also revealed that Yadgir which is the most backward region in Karnataka has outperformed Bengaluru by securing 88 per cent pass percentage in Engineering.

Bengaluru’s pass percentage in engineering stood at 83 per cent. Karnataka higher education minister MC Sudhakar who announced the KCET results stated that a total of 2,61,610 candidates had applied out of which 2,44,345 candidates appeared for the test.

• Based on the guidelines of INC and directions of the government, CET was conducted for BSc (Nursing) also, and a total of 1,66,808 candidates have got the eligibility.
• In engineering, Vignesh Nataraj Kumar from Bengaluru topped CET with 97.8 per cent, followed by Arjun Krishnaswamy (97.5 per cent), Bengaluru and Samrudh Shetty, (97.1 per cent), Dharwad.

This year, no candidate scored 60 in physics and chemistry in CET. However, four students in Maths and 138 students in Biology scored 60. Although the seat the matrix is still not decided, KEA director S Ramya stayed that around 53,000 seats are reserved for engineering for CET candidates.

The results also come at a time when the private colleges have hiked the admission fees for government seats by 10%, for engineering courses. The minister however did not disclose the revised admission fees after the hike. “The hike came into effect during the previous government’s rule. Since the negotiations for the same was done as per formalities, it won’t be appropriate for us to do anything about it right now,” said Sudhakar.

Meanwhile, the KEA from Friday will begin the awareness programme for eligible CET candidates on the document verification process and other formalities for admission. The counselling session meanwhile is expected to begin in a week’s time. To facilitate candidates who have passed 12th standard from CBSE, CISCE, 10+2, IGCSE, other boards and candidates who have passed Karnataka 2nd PUC / 12th standard before 2023, the KEA has provided the last opportunity.

Attendance shortage: 4,492 students to miss II PUC exam in Karnataka As many as 4,492 students will miss the second pre-university final examinations, starting from Thursday, due to attendance shortage. The Department of School Education and Literacy has brought back the 75 per cent compulsory attendance rule from this year.

• Students who failed to maintain 75 per cent of the attendance, will not be allowed to appear for the exams.
• The department of PU education had issued notices to students on the same and had shared attendance shortage list with principals of PU colleges in the state.
• This year, considering the students’ list sent by colleges, the department has not generated admission tickets to those who have less than 75 per cent attendance.

During 2021 and 2022 board exams, the department had provided exemption from mandatory attendance of 75 per cent considering the Covid-19 pandemic, closure of schools and colleges, delayed reopening, etc. However, this year, the department has brought back the 75 per cent attendance rule and informed the students about the same in the beginning of the academic year itself.

• Despite repeated notices and warnings, these students failed to maintain 75 per cent attendance and wasted one academic year as they will be allowed to attend exams only as fresh candidates in 2024,” said a senior official of the department.
• The Rule 21 of Karnataka Education Act 2006 mandates 75 per cent attendance to get eligibility for students to appear for class 10 and II PU board exams.

These amendments were brought following the Supreme Court’s directions and according to the rule, if any student falls short of attendance (less than 75 per cent), such students will not be allowed to appear for exams and admission tickets will not be issued.

1. Before this, there was a provision to give relaxation considering medical certificates and this was misused by students.
2. Now, there aren’t such provisions,” the official said.
3. More than 20,000 students have missed their II PU exams between 2015 and 2020.
4. The II PU exams will be held at 1,109 exam centres across the state, starting from Thursday.
