Why Dhoni is not playing in Legends league?
MS Dhoni cannot play any Legends League despite retiring from international cricket. Photo: AP KEY HIGHLIGHTS
MS Dhoni isn’t part of the ongoing Legends League CricketThe former India captain retired from international cricket in 2020He is confirmed to lead Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023
The 3rd season of the Legends League Cricket kicked off with India Maharajas taking on Asia Lions in the first game of the tournament in Doha on Friday (March 10). Gautam Gambhir is the captain of India Maharajas while Shahid Afridi is leading Asia Lions.
Aaron Finch will be leading World Giants in the T20 tournament. Apart from Gambhir, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Robin Uthappa and Pragyan Ojha are among the legends who are part of the team. The presence of these players makes India a strong squad. But there is one legend who isn’t part of the India Maharajas squad.
MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, isn’t playing the tournament. The India legend quit top-flight cricket back in August 2020 but he doesn’t play any Legends League. In fact, the Indian Premier League ( IPL ) is the only tournament that he has played since his retirement.
Is MS Dhoni not allowed to take part in the Legends League or any other tournament? Or does he stay away from these tournaments? Dhoni cannot play any league even if he wants to as he still plays IPL. As per the BCCI’s rules, a player has to quit Indian cricket completely to be eligible to play the foreign leagues or any other league.
Indian cricket includes international cricket, IPL and domestic cricket. While Dhoni has given up international cricket and domestic cricket, he continues to play IPL. He still plays under the BCCI’s umbrella and will be allowed to play any other league once he retires from IPL.
Dhoni will be leading Chennai Super Kings in the 16th edition of IPL. He is expected to take a call on his IPL career after IPL 2023 and will be allowed to take part in any league after that. It is highly unlikely that Dhoni will play any tournament once he leaves IPL. The future ICC Hall of Famer lives a private life in Ranchi and stays away from the limelight.
He has also distanced himself from social media and as Virat Kohli recently revealed, Dhoni doesn’t even see his phone.
