Can I prepare for CAT in 5 months?

Planning your Preparation – Starting in June? The short answer is Yes. The syllabus covered for CAT is very straightforward. Maths syllabus is equivalent to what is seen from the 6 th to the 10 th standard text books, and basic reading comprehension and sentence structures in English.

The exam is tough because the questions are very application-intensive and because there are ~2 lakh people fighting for ~6000-12000 good seats An aspirant can start by June, comfortably finish all the portions by August, or latest early September, take 20 mock CATs and be ready for CAT by November.

This exam is as much about momentum and intensity as it is about knowledge or application. The intensity with which one prepares in the last lap will be a bigger determinant than how long you have been poring over basic formulae.

So, why do people start 12-months before CAT? I am starting preparation now, what should be the plan? I started preparation last November, what should I do now?

This trend of starting 12 or 15-months before CAT started recently. When I took my CAT, we guys used to start preparing in August (reluctantly). Now, I took my CAT in 2000 and back then the CAT exam was in December. But even adjusting for that, we guys used to prepare for barely 3-3.5 months.

But we threw in a lot in that final lap.
Many of my friends hit 30 mock CATs before the exam.
Back then 70% of preparation used to be about taking practice exams.
Most of us would have been shocked if someone had asked us to prepare for percentages for 5 weeks) The most important driver for this change has been the development (over-development) of the test-preparation industry.

It really helps the industry if college-goers start enrolling themselves for courses 12 or 18 months before the exam. Less than 5% of this brigade takes the exam seriously. Any trainer will tell you that the longer term batches are the worst preparing.

Students start missing classes and delude themselves into believing that they are geared merely because they started very early.12 months into the course, the average attendance levels are less than 10% and when the time is perfect for starting preparation, these long-term and uber-long term batches lose all momentum.

To start with, do not tell yourself you dont have a chance because you are starting late. Cover topic by topic for maths for the next ~8 weeks. Read something for at least an hour each day. Spend 2-4 hours each week on DI and/or LR. Run this schedule for ~ 8weeks during which time you should have also taken 2-3 mock CATs.

In this first phase, do not worry about time pressure, speed, overall percentiles, etc. By middle of August, you would have seen most question types, and covered most topics in quant. From here on, take one mock CAT every week and fill whatever gap areas you have. Identify gap areas based on your own gut feel and from what the mock CATs tell you.

Have this as the plan for the next 6 weeks. During this phase, you should start building intensity. Plan part tests and exercises in short bursts. Mix up topics and ensure that you avoid concentration lapses. You should create a package like 10 questions in Number Theory, 3 selected passages from Economist, TIME and NYtimes, one DI grid and one LR puzzle from the web in 45 minutes and test yourself at breakneck speed.

Can I prepare for CAT in 3 months?

Can I crack CAT in 10 days?

Last few days before CAT exam, I had applied for the preparatory leave from the office and started preparing myself for the exam. Here are 5 ways that can help you guide during the last 10 days of preparation before CAT exam. Set a timetable for entire 10 days and adhere strictly to the deadlines. One needs to follow a strict schedule and prepare with a relaxed state of mind.

Give mock tests on alternate days at an entire stretch of 3 hours in the morning. Analyze your paper and solve the non-attempted as well as the incorrectly answered questions on the same evening. Analyze it regarding all sections, score and time took to address each type of problem. Improve the speed and keep revising your strategy to increase the number of attempts and reduce the time invested in attempting wrong questions. Remaining alternate days focus on your weaker areas and pain points that need more practice and revision. Focus on each of the four sections in a topic rational manner. Avoid studying anything on the day mock test is planned, as it will exhaust the aspirant and diminish his focus. Be thorough with the formulas of Quant and specific tactics of solving numerically. Revise the particular set of words for improving vocabulary. Since there are infinite words to prepare, keep certain words highlighted that you can glance during these days and try to memorize the meanings of the words from its base word. This would help in identifying the meaning of new words as well. Read the newspaper and keep yourself updated with General Awareness on a daily basis without fail. How many questions should I solve daily for CAT?

How To Prepare for the CAT in 180 Days? 1) Know your test: First things first, be aware of the sections in CAT, namely VARC, DILR and QA. Know the pattern and number of questions asked. Generally there are a total of 100 questions in CAT. The distribution is 34, 32 and 34 for VARC, DILR and QA respectively.

The questions are of MCQ and TITA(type in the answer) types.
Each question carries 3 marks, hence the paper is of 300 marks.
For a wrong answer in MCQs, you get -1 while there are no negative marks in TITA questions.
Please note there is no hard and fast paper pattern.
This is the pattern that is observed in the past years.

CAT has a notorious reputation of throwing in surprises.2) Strategy for VARC: The VARC section will consist of 24 Reading Comprehension questions and 10 Verbal Ability questions. The RC section contains passages from varied fields like, science, business and economics, social sciences, current events.

Please note the list is not exhaustive. CAT may, and does surprise you. Since RCs are given from such diversified sources, your reading habits should also be diverse. Solve as many questions as you can from previous years and test series. Try solving ten questions for VA everyday. You may choose 10 para jumbles one day, 10 para summary the next day and 10 odd one out the third day.

Solving 1800 VA questions will make you unstoppable. C) Strategy for DILR: The DILR section consists of 8 sets, each set containing four questions. There is no distinction between LR sets and DI sets as logical thinking is required for solving the DI sets too.

In recent years, the DILR section is generally the most difficult, and hence you must focus on accuracy rather than speed. You should not expect to get specific question types like seating arrangement for this section. Questions are made to test your ability to think out of the box at the spot. Hence, for this section, it is advisable to solve new questions types, without others help.

In the exam you will face new question types demanding out of the box thinking. Your mentor cannot develop this for you, you need to do it yourself. Solve previous year papers and study materials. Try to solve at least two sets everyday and in 180 days you are done with 360 sets! Also note, in the past 2-3 years, solving only 3-4 sets correctly will fetch you outstanding percentiles.

D) Strategy for Quantitative Aptitude: Unlike DILR, you can expect similar questions from your textbook and previous years for this section.
If your basics are not clear, go topic wise first and clear all the concepts.
If you know the concepts, then start solving practice test, identify which chapter seems difficult.

If there is any, read the concepts from that chapter. You should try to complete all the topics by three to four months max. Once all the concepts are clear, try to solve test papers and practice sets with questions from all the topics. Remember, the CAT paper will have questions distributed from all the topics.

It is advisable to solve 15-20 questions daily back to back.
Solving 2700 – 3600 problems in 180 days will be the last nail in the coffin to seal the best score in CAT.
E) Strategy for MOCK TESTS: Any top percentiler in CAT has solved anywhere between 50 to 100 mocks.
As you have only 180 days, try to write at least 50 mock CATs.
